BRIEF HISTORY OF NEW CENTURY SCHOOLS SYSTEMS

The New Century Schools Systems (NCSS) is a group of private secular Institutions that are unique in their styles and practices, with headquarters at Mfandena I, P.O. Box 1483 Yaoundé — Cameroon.

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the group, Mrs. Hannah NDJIKI-NYA, established the New Century Bilingual School (NCBS) Mfandena I — Yaoundé, the first school within the NCSS group, following Ministerial Decision of February 15, 1999 issued by the Minister of Secondary Education.

The school opened its doors effectively to the public on October 10, 2001, in accordance with the Ministerial order signed by the 1st Secretary at the Ministry of Education.

It started with fourteen (14) pupils and four (5) teachers; both drawn from the English-speaking and the French-speaking subsystems of education.

Driven by the core vision and mission statement of the New Century Schools Systems group, the management of the New Century Bilingual School never gave up despite the timid start. Nothing could deter their determination to fully engage and forge ahead.

The greater challenge was that of having to start a school on a full bilingual immersion program, which had never been experimented in any primary school system in Cameroon. The resolve of the management to attain their education objectives was stronger than these challenges.

In fact, they were all motivated, determined, zealous and hard-working, which paid off sooner than later. The management of the New Century Bilingual School were delighted to graduate their pioneer batch of perfectly, bilingual pupils in June 2010. These graduates are serving in different works of life all over the world today.

The school alumni fit comfortably into any of the two systems of education (i.e. the French and the English subsystems) practised in Cameroon today. As the Cameroon population of school age grew steadily over the years, the management of New Century Bilingual School started facing problems with their logistical and accommodation capacity.

This was happening at a time the school reputation was making news all over the cities; news about the high standard of its education.

Consequently, the management of New Century Bilingual School was obliged to turn down numerous requests from parents who started flocking in to seek admission for their children.

Faced with the inability of the New Century Bilingual School to accommodate increasing requests for admission from the parents of prospective pupils, year-on-year, the Founder and CEO of the group had to find a solution to the problem.
It is in this regard that the group office started scouting out for another space somewhere within the city of Yaoundé in order to expand their school’s accommodation and pedagogic facilities.

As a result, another school, New Century II Bilingual School (NC.II.BS), opened its doors in September 2013, just at Ebogo – Soa in the outskirts of the city of Yaoundé.

Meanwhile came additional pressure from parents with pupils in the English subsystem of education who felt that the mission of the New Century Schools Systems could not just end at the primary school’s level.

The appeal from parents was especially timely as graduating pupils from the New Century Bilingual School who sought and got admission into other secondary schools to further their studies, excelled and featured amongst the top academic performers.

This appeal from parents was a genuine call and another challenge that the group office felt obliged to consider and surmount.

It is in response to the appeal from parents that the Founder and CEO of of the New Century Schools Systems then resolved to start laying the groundwork for the creation of a secondary education in the English subsystem of education.

After feasibility studies and consultative talks with some of the stakeholders (especially parents who had experienced the New Century Schools English subsystem of education at primary school level), the group office proceeded to open the New Century Institute of Learning (NCIL), a secondary school situated at Ebogo – Soa in the outskirts of Yaoundé.

The above decision was in line with the sharp rise in the market demand of parents for English subsystem of education in general and Anglo-Saxon system of education at the secondary school level in particular. In addition, the group office’s decision to create an English subsystem of education at the secondary school level was in fulfillment of the promise the Founder/CEO made to parents during the tenth anniversary celebrations of the New Century Bilingual School in February 2013.

The New Century Institute of Learning (NCIL), Ebogo – Soa, opened its doors in 2013 to the pioneer batch of students who at the time were still patching up with the New Century II Bilingual School (NC.II.BS), Nkolfoulou, before later moving into its permanent site in September 2014.
