OUR PEDAGOGIC INNOVATIONS

New Century Schools System

Our pedagogic innovations have to do with the implementation of new/different methods in the process of teaching and learning that promote meaningful learning amongst learners as well as sharpening their skills to meet and defeat the daily challenges they encounter. Consequently, over the years, we try as much as possible to keep innovating our pedagogy to suit the demands of the learners, especially in the domains of teaching, evaluation and orientation.

Teaching:
For example, the teaching methods at NCSS take into consideration the program given by the state. In doing so, we constantly deploy strategies that will keep our students abreast with the teaching methods, which has led us to implement the following;

E Learning:
We have a very effective ongoing e-learning program where we do not only teach students their course lessons, but also on how to carry out research work. The program also directs students to sites where they can get relevant information relating to their studies.

Checking of notes:
We check the notes of students in every class to ensure the content and form is meaningful and qualitative.

• Assignments/projects:
We ensure that we give students assignments/projects based on the content of the curriculum.

• Revision/research:
We do a thorough revision of lessons taught, in preparation for the end-of-month evaluation. We do this exclusively with the use of specially designed workbooks that takes into consideration lessons covered so far. In addition, we project videos in class, which guide our students on how to carry out research work, as well as on how to apply and interpret the lessons we teach throughout the month.

EVALUATION

At the end of every month, we evaluate our students on the following:
• Assignments and projects;
• Effective presence and class participation;
• E-learning evaluation;
• On-the-spot evaluation.

ORIENTATION /COUNSELLING

Our orientation and counselling department comprises a qualified and highly experienced team that does follow-ups, not just on the academic aspect of the students, but also ensures the psycho-emotional stability of the students on and off campus. To this effect, our orientation team organizes general counselling exercises once every term to address the special needs of our students, taking into consideration the demands of students, vis-à-vis their respective classes. The exercises are complementary to the one-on-one counselling done to students who may have specific problems. Over the years, this has been able to bridge the gap that existed in some homes between parents and students. We organize our counselling exercises as follows:

• Forms 1-3: Basically, we talk about initiation to secondary school and the importance of adopting certain behaviour both in school and at home. Our major strength is our talk to students on how to cope with physical and societal challenges that they will soon encounter as they eventually grow up.

• Forms 4 and 5: we orientate students on choosing subjects, coping with puberty as well as peer influence.

• For Lower sixth form, we orientate them on choosing subjects in the high school (with focus on the series) and the different societal openings they will find after pursuing the path they have chosen.

• In upper sixth form, our major focus is guiding the students on choosing carriers and inculcating in them certain values they must have by the time they graduate from high school, if they hope to become worthy men and women.

We remain extremely grateful to parents who have always supported us in this daunting task, and through this platform invite parents who are still lagging behind to contribute their quota in giving our children the best of orientation.
